The Concept of Design This work can be traced back to the “Harmonious Four” painting, which relates a story about four animals sitting under a tree and arguing over its ownership. Only after seeking the advice of a wise man do the animals come to realize that each one of them played a key role in the growth of the tree; from seed (partridge) to germination (rabbit), sapling (monkey) and small tree (elephant). After reflecting on this revelation, the animals come to understand the importance of cherishing their time with the tree and never again argue. Traditionally, this story is used as an allegory for the morals and order required to establish a harmonious society. The animals also represent the four classes or social groups that make up urban society and the way in which these interact, highlighting the importance of their cooperation. As such, the piece highlights the fact that in addition to determining right and wrong on a case by case basis the courts also attach great importance to social concord, stopping disputes and seeking harmony from disharmony. This is how they maintain social order, fairness and justice, ensuring everyone in society lives side by side in harmony and prosperity. |
