Introduction
In 1973, 26-year-old Lin Hwai-min and 10 young dancers founded “Cloud Gate,” Taiwan’s first-ever professional dance group, on the second floor of a noodle shop in an alley near Xinyi Road in Taipei. At that time, nobody could have imagined that said dance group would ultimately influence the development of Taiwanese culture and become a part of people’s memory spanning three, four generations.
In 2020, Cheng Tsung-Lung succeeded Lin Hwai-min as the artistic director of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, delivering performance tours after performance tours introducing creative, innovative, and lively content. Over the past five decades, Cloud Gate has transformed from a local performance group to one representing Taiwan, presenting Taiwan to the rest of the world (The New York Times).
Through the Cloud Gate 50 seminar, Cheng will take everyone backstage, seeing how choreographers and dancers use their brains and move their bodies to deliver dance performances celebrating Cloud Gate’s 50th anniversary.
About the Speaker
Cheng Tsung-lung
Born in Bangka, Taipei, Cheng Tsung-lung succeeded Lin Hwai-min as the artistic director of the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre in 2020. He drew creative inspiration from his childhood as a street vendor and showcase through his works street life as well as the ups and downs of life. He previously won the 16th MASDANZA Choreography Competition and the bronze medal at the No Ballet International Choreography Competition.
In 2016, Cheng created 13 Tongues, exploring Taiwan’s ancient and unrefined culture. The Cloud Gate Dance Theater subsequently delivered a 13 Tongues performance tour in Paris, Lyon, London, and Stockholm, winning the acclaim of the French media that referred to it an “eye-catching” success.
In 2019, Cheng created Lunar Halo, combining the elements of human culture, technologies, modern day, and future. SeeingDance, an international professional dance review website, called this performance a fierce beauty. In 2020, Cheng introduced Sounding Light, bringing bodies and nature together and winning the praise of a dance review as an exquisitely planned performance that was worth watching over and over again. In 2022, Cheng created Send in a Cloud, playing Bach’s unaccompanied Cello Suite using saxophones to allow dancers to tell their personal life stories with their bodies.
In 2020, Cheng, along with Akram Khan and William Forsythe, was listed as one of the 50 contemporary choreographers in a dance guide published by British publisher Routledge.
