2009 NCKU Environment and Art Festival
“Dialogues between Generations”
Were we thrown back to the jungle, what would differentiate human beings from animals?
How could human beings have evolved from fish swimming in the ocean to become homoerectus on land?
Why is an art work called ‘Cicada’ while it appears to be a deformed human body crouching on the floor?
All these questions will be asked during the Environment and Art Festival of NCKU.
Artists whose works are on display are going to offer their answers.
In 2009, near the end of the first decade of the 21th century, NCKU will hold another large-scale art festival following its 1998 exhibition of sculptures. This will offer a great variety of artistic activities on campus.
It is one of the major tasks for NCKU to construct an artistic and humane environment in order to advance to its summit of excellence. The 1998 exhibition of sculptures welcomed 300, 000 visits. It constituted a breakthrough for NCKU that began its career as an engineering college and successfully transformed itself into a comprehensive university. This last exhibition has added more than forty art works on campus.
Over the past decade, NCKU has expanded from six to eight campuses, and from six to nine colleges. The president Lai, a fellow of Academia Sinica and a prominent scientist inMolecular Biology but with a deep love of art, believes it is time for NCKU to conduct a comprehensive renovation on campus, make visible modern concepts and technology of art on campus. The president believes this will stimulate the artistic nature and human capacity among members of NCKU, and subsequently facilitate a closer relationship between people and their environment as well as among people themselves.
During the art festival “Dialogues between Generations”, the contemporary young artists will initiate dialogues with their established predecessors in terms of sculptures, installation art and digital creation. Members of NCKU and general art lovers will have the opportunity to know and become engaged with the environment via their dialogues.
This 2009 also celebrates the birth of Charles Darwin in his 200th anniversary as well as the publication of On the Origin of Species in which he detailed his theory of evolution. For a development from a concern with the human existence to a stress on theenvironmental issues, NCKU will hold an art festival centered on “Humanity, Technology, Environment” to mark and celebrate this annus memorabilis.
The Environment and Art Festival will be inaugurated in November at the founding anniversary of NCKU. There will be shows over the sky of Zhishan campus, although the display of art works has started since June. The exhibition features collections of Chi MeiMuseum and more than one hundred works by more than eighty individuals and teams. This will bring into climax art and humanity on NCKU campus. The Environment and Art Festival will continue till June 2010. All visitors are welcome.
